How to Get Pet Stains Out of Carpet at Home

Accidents happen to every pet owner. The first few minutes matter most, and a few common mistakes can turn a small spot into a permanent stain and a smell that keeps coming back. Here is the honest, step-by-step approach we recommend from cleaning pet stains in homes across Halifax and HRM.

How do you get fresh pet urine out of carpet?

Act fast and work from the outside of the spot inward so you don’t spread it.

  1. Blot — don’t rub. Press a thick, clean towel or paper towels firmly onto the wet spot and stand on it to soak up as much urine as possible. Repeat with dry towels until almost nothing transfers.
  2. Rinse with cool water. Pour a small amount of cool (not hot) water on the spot and blot again. This dilutes what’s left in the fibres.
  3. Apply a pet enzyme cleaner. Enzyme cleaners break down the proteins and uric acid in urine that cause the smell. Follow the label and let it sit for the full time it says.
  4. Blot and let it air dry. Cover with a dry towel and a little weight, then let it dry completely. Don’t let pets back on the spot until it’s dry.

Does vinegar and baking soda get pet urine out of carpet?

A mix of equal parts white vinegar and cool water can help neutralize fresh urine odor on many synthetic carpets. Blot it on, wait a few minutes, then blot it out. Once the area is dry, a light sprinkle of baking soda left overnight and vacuumed up can absorb leftover smell.

Always test any solution on a hidden spot first — inside a closet or under a couch — because some carpets, wool rugs and dyes react badly. Vinegar helps with fresh accidents, but it rarely fixes old urine that has soaked into the pad underneath.

How do you get old, dried pet urine smell out of carpet?

If you can smell it but can’t see it, the urine has usually soaked through the carpet into the pad and sometimes the subfloor. Surface sprays only treat the top of the fibres, which is why the smell returns on humid days.

At home, you can saturate the spot with an enzyme cleaner (enough to reach as deep as the urine did), cover it loosely with plastic so it stays wet longer, and let it work for several hours before blotting and drying. Large or repeated areas usually need professional treatment that reaches the source.

Why does the pet urine smell keep coming back?

Urine contains salts and uric acid crystals that don’t dissolve in plain water. When humidity rises or the carpet gets wet, those crystals reactivate and release the smell again. Pets can also smell spots humans can’t, and they often go back to the same place. Treating the source — not just the surface — is what stops the cycle.

What should you NOT use on pet stains?

These are the most common mistakes we see, and some of them make a stain permanent:

  1. Heat or steam on urine. Hot water, steam cleaners and hair dryers can set the proteins in urine and lock in the stain and smell.
  2. Ammonia-based cleaners. Urine already contains ammonia, so these can smell like urine to your pet and invite them back to the same spot.
  3. Bleach or hydrogen peroxide on coloured carpet. They can strip the dye and leave a light patch that can’t be fixed. Never mix cleaning products together.
  4. Scrubbing hard. Rubbing frays the fibres and spreads the stain wider.
  5. Soaking with too much water. Over-wetting pushes urine deeper into the pad and can cause mildew.

How do you clean dog or cat vomit and poop from carpet?

Let solid messes firm up slightly, then lift them off with a plastic scraper or spoon and paper towel — don’t press down. Blot what’s left with cool water and a little mild dish soap, rinse with plain water, and blot dry. Follow with an enzyme cleaner to deal with odor. Vomit can contain stomach acid and food dyes that stain quickly, so treat it as soon as you find it.

How do you get pet stains out of a couch?

Check the tag under the cushions first. "W" means water-based cleaners are okay, "S" means solvent-only, "W/S" means either, and "X" means vacuum only — no liquids. Using water on an "S" fabric can leave rings and water marks.

For water-safe fabrics, blot, use a small amount of enzyme cleaner, and blot again without soaking the cushion. Urine that has reached the foam inside a cushion is very hard to fix at home — that’s where professional upholstery cleaning helps.

When should you call a professional for pet stains?

Call a professional if the smell comes back after cleaning, the stain covers a large area, the accident happened on a couch or mattress, or there are many old spots (a UV flashlight in a dark room will often show them). Honestly, we recommend not experimenting with store-bought products on serious urine stains — the wrong chemicals or technique can set the stain and permanently damage your carpet.
